New Study: Warming stopped because of pollution
SMOKE BELCHING FROM ASIA'S RAPIDLY GROWING ECONOMIES IS LARGELY RESPONSIBLE FOR A HALT IN GLOBAL WARMING IN THE DECADE AFTER 1998 BECAUSE OF SULPHUR'S COOLING EFFECT, EVEN THOUGH GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS SOARED, A U.S. STUDY SAID ON MONDAY.
The paper raised the prospect of more rapid, pent-up climate change when emerging economies eventually crack down on pollution.
World temperatures did not rise from 1998 to 2008, while manmade emissions of carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuel grew by nearly a third, various data show.
The researchers from Boston and Harvard Universities and Finland's University of Turku said pollution, and specifically sulphur emissions, from coal-fueled growth in Asia was responsible for the cooling effect.
Sulphur allows water drops or aerosols to form, creating hazy clouds which reflect sunlight back into space.
"Anthropogenic activities that warm and cool the planet largely cancel after 1998, which allows natural variables to play a more significant role," the paper said....

Actually I’ve heard of this reasoning before. However, rather than stopping global warming, couldn’t the cleaning up of the air in the 70s through the 90s in the West account for the rise of temperatures we saw then rather than the minor increase in a trace gas?

Useful idiots: the MIT version
Of all idiots, none is so useful as he who can masquerade as a genius.
MIT LINGUISTICS PROFESSOR NOAM CHOMSKY RECENTLY DENOUNCED HUGO CHAVEZ, ACCUSING THE VENEZUELAN STRONGMAN OF MAKING AN "ASSAULT" ON HIS NATION'S DEMOCRACY AND OF CRUELTY WITH RESPECT TO A FEMALE JUDGE he imprisoned for issuing an unwelcome ruling. The criticism made headlines, as the "renowned scholar" HAD LONG GIVEN AID AND COMFORT TO EGO-AND-MOUTH CHAVEZ. In fact, when the leader denounced President Bush in an infamous 2006 U.N. address, it was Chomsky's book
Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance that he waved and used as a prop. And Chomsky often praises Venezuela's socialist revolution, most recently saying, "It's hard to judge how successful they [the Venezuelan socialists] are, but if they are successful they would be seeds of a better world."
Well, socialism has only failed every time it's been tried, but I guess CHOMSKY'S RENOWNED INTELLECT HAS FINALLY FIGURED OUT A WAY TO DO THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND ACHIEVE DIFFERENT RESULTS.
But some people never learn, and in our time they're known as leftists. It's bad enough when a starry-eyed teenager gloms onto a demagogue and then registers surprise when the scorpion acts in accordance with his nature, BUT IT'S DOWNRIGHT PATHETIC WHEN AN OLD MAN BEHAVES AS IF HE HAS BEEN BORN YESTERDAY. …

The problem with people on the left is they want to believe so much that they make fools of themselves when their solutions don’t work.
DC Schools cheating scandal heats up
Top educator Wayne Ryan of Noyes Education Campus in Washington DC resigned his post after having been promoted by super school reformer Michelle Rhee. What precipitated the change? Following a timeline going back three years reveals questions which cannot be explained away. THE STORY INVOLVES POSSIBLE CHEATING ON TESTS BY "ERASURE CORRECTIONS," BONUSES HANDED OUT TO THOSE TEACHERS AND PRINCIPALS OVERSEEING THE TESTING, AND RHEE'S FEIGNED INNOCENCE ABOUT THE MATTER.
A year after StudentsFirst founder Michelle Rhee assumed the Chancellorship of DC schools she told Charlie Rose that standardized test scores should be given "the greatest weight" in performance-based teacher evaluations. That was 2008. Her nonprofit website bio makes the audacious claim that "under her leadership, the worst performing school district in the country became the only major city system to see double digit growth in state reading and math scores."
If Rhee's "double-digit growth" numbers sound too good to be true they probably are. A March 2011 report in USA Today investigated AN ABNORMAL AMOUNT OF ERASURES OCCURRING ON STANDARDIZED TESTS IN 103 PUBLIC SCHOOLS FOR THE 3 YEARS RHEE WAS AT THE HELM. The article focused on Noyes where in 2009 one seventh-grade classroom "averaged 12.7 wrong-to-right erasures per student" on a standard reading test….

Add this to the cheating scandal in the Baltimore schools and you have to wonder if there is something in the water in the DC area that makes integrity an endangered virtue?
Perhaps Michael Moore was wrong about Cuba’s free health care
…IN A JULY 2 ARTICLE, EL PERIODICO REPORTED THAT A CUBAN PHYSICIAN BOTCHED CHAVEZ'S FIRST SURGERY -- "ERRONEOUSLY" TREATING HIM ONLY FOR A "PELVIC ABSCESS" INSTEAD OF FOR A CANCEROUS TUMOR. A "few days later, the injury to his (cancerous) tumor fistulized," spreading an infection to the rest of his body, El Periodico explained. With Chavez in serious condition, Cuba then flew in a Spanish surgeon from Madrid to perform a second surgery.
According to El Periodico, CHAVEZ'S "COLON CANCER...HAS PERFORATED THE INTESTINAL WALL AND PROVOKED AN ABDOMINAL INFECTION." It added: "The president, for a minimum of three months, will have to have a colostomy."
Chavez's Spanish surgeon may have been José Luis García Sabrido, chief of surgery of Gregorio Marañón Hospital of Madrid, El Periodico said; however, the paper noted it could not confirm that. García once operated on Fidel Castro -- surgery that apparently was needed after Cuban physicians botched an earlier surgery on Castro, according to some accounts.
MOST OMINOUSLY FOR CHAVEZ, EL PERIODICO SAID HE "WILL BE UNABLE TO RECEIVE CHEMOTHERAPY BECAUSE THE FIRST (SURGICAL) INTERVENTION PREVENTS IT." Chavez's condition is "serious" because of the possibility that the tumor has produced a metastasis" (spread cancer cells) due to the first, inappropriate surgery….

How to speak Democrat
Maybe his fundraising base is not to be compared to Mitt Romney, and maybe he has never held an executive office, but Thaddeus McCotter has certain talents that commend him as a member of the GOP 2012 field. Alinsky taught President Obama and the rest of us that ridicule is a powerful political weapon. In that spirit, check out Rep. McCotter on "how to speak Democrat"

Something we need to remember.
