Obama's election strategy

Politics
Change in voter law in Florida will hamper Obama

Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) could face a rebellion from local elections officials and potential lawsuits over a controversial law that tightened restrictions on voter registration.

A sweeping bill passed by the GOP-controlled state Legislature and recently signed by Scott MAKES IT HARDER FOR THIRD-PARTY GROUPS SUCH AS UNIONS AND THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS TO LAUNCH VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVES.

CRITICS SAY THE LAW, WHICH ALSO CUTS THE NUMBER OF DAYS FOR EARLY VOTING, WILL HINDER THE ABILITY OF STUDENTS, AFRICAN AMERICANS AND HISPANICS TO CAST THEIR BALLOTS. These groups traditionally favor Democrats, which could mean the law will undercut President Obama's reelection effort in the Sunshine State....

Just as motor voter helped the democrats, this law will hinder their electoral efforts.

Why is Obama bragging about the auto bailouts?

You can understand the pinch in which the Obama reelection campaign finds itself. UNEMPLOYMENT IS HIGH, THE DEBT IS HUGE, THE ECONOMY HAS SLOWED TO A CRAWL AND OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH ISRAEL IS THE WORST IT HAS BEEN IN DECADES (maybe, ever). Scraping the bottom of the barrel, THE OBAMA TEAM HAS DECIDED TO BRAG ABOUT THE CAR COMPANY BAILOUTS. No, honest. The National Journal reported last week:

Surrogates for President Obama took aim Tuesday at several of his potential 2012 rivals for opposing the auto industry bailout, making clear that THEY PLAN ON MAKING THE ISSUE CENTRAL TO THE DEBATE IN THE BATTLEGROUND STATES OF MICHIGAN AND OH

This is definitely one that you want to read as it exposes the misrepresentations that is part of politics.

Obama’s reelection strategy

We are beginning to see the contours of the upcoming 2012 reelection campaign of Barack Obama. Whether always officially sanctioned or not, OBAMA’S CAMPAIGN WILL FOCUS ON THREE GENERAL THEMES: A) THE 2008 MELTDOWN OF THE ECONOMY ON BUSH’S WATCH; B) CONSERVATIVE HEARTLESSNESS IN GUTTING CHERISHED ENTITLEMENT PROGRAMS; AND C) RACIAL BIAS BEHIND ANY CRITICISM OF BARACK OBAMA

Well, he can’t focus on his accomplishments. Other than bin Laden, there aren’t any.

NY TIMES editorial fails Economics 101

WHEN CONSUMERS ARE CONSTRAINED, SO IS HIRING, because without customers, employers are hard pressed to retain workers or make new hires. A recent Labor Department report showed a greater-than-expected rise in the number of people claiming jobless benefits even as private-sector economic forecasts are being revised downward — both very bad omens for continued job growth.

REPUBLICAN LAWMAKERS HAVE RESPONDED TO RENEWED SIGNS OF WEAKNESS WITH A JOBS PLAN THAT PRESCRIBES MORE OF THE SAME “FIXES” THAT REPUBLICANS ALWAYS RECOMMEND no matter the problem: mainly high-end tax cuts, deregulation, more domestic oil drilling and federal spending cuts.

THE WHITE HOUSE HAS OFFERED SOUNDER IDEAS, INCLUDING JOB RETRAINING, PLANS TO BOOST EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AND TAX INCREASES TO HELP COVER NEEDED SPENDING.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/31/opinion/31tue1.html?_r=2&hp

Hmmm, let’s see. The economy is bad so people aren’t hiring and the democrat solution is to retrain people for non-existent jobs and take money out of the economy so consumers have even less to spend. And the NYT thinks these are sounder ideas? I do believe the Grey Lady is suffering from dementia.

How the press would label Obama if he were a Republican

1) THIS GUY IS WAY TOO STUPID TO BE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES! Poor Dan Quayle was forever branded as stupid for misspelling the word potato. It's not often noted, however, that the card that he was given by the school had misspelled the word. Then there's Obama, the man who stammers without a teleprompter, the guy who won't release his college records. How does Quayle's gaffe compare to Obama thinking there are 57 states?....

2) OBAMA'S AN AMATEURISH COWBOY WHO'S WRECKING OUR IMAGE AROUND THE WORLD! Obama has made Jimmy Carter look like a foreign policy mastermind since he got into the White House. Sure, he gets credit for getting Osama Bin Laden. When the military walked up to Obama and said, "We know where Bin Laden is. Can we go get him?" he made the "gutsy call" to say "yes." Of course, he's also damaged our relations with Britain, Israel, and Pakistan…

3) OBAMA'S GOING TO BANKRUPT THE COUNTRY BY GIVING OUR MONEY TO HIS CORPORATE CRONIES! Remember when the media talked about the size of the deficit all the time? Remember when we heard about Halliburton and Blackwater on a daily basis? Oh, yes, that was when we had a Republican President. Now we've got the most wasteful spender in the history of our country in the White House, we're in danger of going bankrupt, and tens of billions in tax dollars have been transferred to corporations that have given money to the Democratic Party…

4) HE'S THE JOB-KILLING, GAS-PRICE-RAISING, ECONOMY-WRECKING PRESIDENT! Can you imagine the stories we'd see every day if a Republican were President? We'd have daily stories on the people left homeless by the “Obamaconomy,” human interest stories about single mothers who can't feed their kids anymore, and we'd hear from experts every day about how Obama is killing jobs, raising costs at the pump, and destroying the economy with his policies….

The press has a double standard. If you don’t realize it you are either a leftist radical or a political neophyte....

Obama going to war without congressional approval

Rising Republican star Herman Cain got quite the shock last week when he learned about the powers President Obama claims in the name of national security.

"This is the first that I have heard," Cain exclaimed to his interviewer, the Atlantic's Conor Friedersdorf. "YOU'RE SAYING IT'S OK TO TAKE OUT AMERICAN CITIZENS IF HE SUSPECTS THEY ARE TERRORIST-RELATED. IS THAT WHAT YOU SAID?!"
When Friedersdorf explained, yes, that's Obama's position, a horrified Cain replied: "If you're a citizen, no, it is not right for the president to think he has the power to have you assassinated. No."
Sure, a presidential candidate like Cain should do a better job following the news, but his unscripted reaction was the only appropriate one for a limited-government conservative -- a "gaffe" only in Michael Kinsley's sardonic definition: that rare occasion when a pol accidentally blurts the truth THE TRUTH IS THAT AMERICAN PRESIDENTS HAVE MORE POWER THAN WE CAN SAFELY ENTRUST TO ANY FALLIBLE HUMAN BEING. That was so even before the massive expansion of presidential power that followed Sept. 11....

Liberals must feel a little queasy when they look at Obama.

Economy

Word of the Decade: 'Unsustainable'

We're at a funny place. THE AMERICAN ESTABLISHMENT HAS FINALLY COME AROUND, IN UNISON, TO ADMITTING THAT AMERICA IS IN CRISIS, THAT OUR DEBT ACTUALLY THREATENS OUR ABILITY TO ENDURE, THAT IF WE DON'T MAKE PROGRESS ON THIS, we are going to near our endpoint as a nation. I am struck very recently by the number of leaders in American business, politics and journalism who now get a certain faraway look at the end of an evening or a meal and say, "It's worse than people think, you know." The debt crisis in Europe is not easing but worsening, the U.S. bond markets could bail tomorrow, the culture of Washington will kill any serious attempts at reform . . .

The American establishment, on both sides of the political divide, is admitting as never before that we are in an existential challenge. And this is progress. It was not always so! It wasn't so two years ago.
That's one takeaway from this week's Peterson Foundation fiscal summit in Washington. BILL CLINTON SPOKE OF "PERMANENT STRUCTURAL DEFICITS" AND WARNED THAT "ARITHMETIC STILL MATTERS." We must focus on entitlement spending, he said, "for the same reason Willie Sutton robbed banks: That's where the money is." Virginia's Democratic Sen. Mark Warner: "Congress is Thelma and Louise in that car headed for the cliff." Obama administration economic adviser Gene Sperling -- more on him in a minute -- called for "serious discussion" of the specifics of a debt-reducing plan....

In case you didn’t know it, this is very serious.

Kloppenburg finally gives up

Let's be honest: This outcome has been a fait accompli since the day after the election itself -- and certainly since vote recanvassing was completed. Now, at long last, the "it's over" memo has arrived in JoAnne Kloppenburg's mailbox. Via Politico's Ben Smith:

A Democratic source emails that the long aftermath of a charged judicial race in Wisconsin is finally ending today. JoAnne Kloppenburg will announce at 11 a.m. Central that that she's not going to contest the results of the recount in court, the source says.

Democrats had initially seen the recount as a remedy to doubts about one county's late results, but as those doubts faded it was increasingly seen as a costly distraction from intense recall campaigns on both sides of the aisle.

http://townhall.com/tipsheet/guybenson/2011/05/31/finally_kloppenburg_gives_up_in_wisconsin

I’m sure the people of Wisconsin are happy. Kloppenburg was behind by 7,316 votes before the taxpayers had to pony up another million dollars and ended up 7,316 votes behind.

Climate

WHY 99% OF THUNDERSTORMS DO NOT PRODUCE TORNADOES

I’ve been trying to think of WHY SOME MIGHT ASSUME A WARMER CLIMATE WOULD PRODUCE MORE TORNADOES, and I suspect the main reason is that tornadoes are produced by thunderstorms, and thunderstorms require warm, moist air for fuel. Ergo, warming should lead to more tornadoes.

But even here in the U.S., which is Tornado Central for the world, 99 OUT OF 100 THUNDERSTORMS DO NOT PRODUCE TORNADOES. WHY IS THIS?

THE MISSING INGREDIENT IS WIND SHEAR, specifically an increase in wind speed with height, and a change in wind direction with height.

So what causes this type of wind shear? IT OCCURS IN ADVANCE OF LOW PRESSURE AREAS THAT FORM ALONG THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN WARM AND COOL AIR MASSES. So, anything that increases the frequency of these conditions could lead to more tornadoes.
THE CLASSIC TORNADO SITUATION INVOLVES A LONGWAVE LOW PRESSURE TROUGH OVER THE WESTERN U.S., caused by an unusually cool atmosphere in the lowest 5-10 miles of the atmosphere. This has remained true for this year’s enhanced tornado activity. I SUSPECT THE PERSISTING MOUNTAIN SNOWPACK FROM A VERY SNOWY WINTER HAS PLAYED A ROLE IN THIS.

http://www.drroyspencer.com/

An interesting theory as I look out at the white mountain peaks in Colorado and Aspen Ski Area opens up for Memorial Day weekend having more snow pack than they had on New Year’s Day.
