Rethinking George Bush?Former president George W. Bush left office with the lowest approval
ratings since Richard Nixon. So, for nearly two years, Pres. Barack Obama won
easy applause by prefacing almost every speech on his economic policies with a
“Bush did it” put-down.
But suddenly Bush seems okay. Last week, the president did the
unthinkable: He praised Bush for his past efforts to reach out to Muslims. Vice
President Joe Biden went further and blurted out, “Mr. Bush deserves a lot of
credit.” Biden topped that off with, “Mr. President, thank you.”
What’s going on?
For one thing, recent polls show an astounding rebound in the
former president’s favorability — to the extent that in the bellwether state of
Ohio, voters would rather still have Bush as president than have Obama by a
50–42 margin. Nationwide, Obama’s approval ratings continue to sink to near 40
percent — a nadir that it took years for Bush to reach. IT HAS BECOME BETTER POLITICS TO PRAISE BUSH THAN TO BURY HIM.
Look at the astonishing numbers in the Rasmussen poll released last
week. Nearly seven in 10 respondents (68%) want a smaller government, lower
taxes and fewer services. The party breakdown: GOP, 88%; Democrats, 44%; and Other, 74%. In short, the independent voters who decide national elections have
moved into the anti-spending column. I don't think they'll leave any time soon.
In a note on last week's poll, Rasmussen points out that the only
time it recorded a higher shrink-the-government number, at 70%, was in August
2006. That was just ahead of the famous off-year election in which Republican
voters withheld support for their party's free-spending members in
Congress
With his responsibilities as a father of four, Maged should have shunned a
life of crime. Instead, he advertised his criminal activity with a placard in
his shop window, promising to press men's suits for 35 cents. This he did, even
though President Franklin Roosevelt's New Dealers, who knew an amazing number of things -- his economic aides were not called a "Brains Trust" for nothing -- knew that the proper price for pressing a man's suit was 40 cents.
In its third quarterly report of 2010, the UCLA Anderson Forecast predicts.
"very sluggish growth" for the foreseeable future as the U.S. economy continues
to recover from the recession. As for the California economy, the state is
looking at a difficult period ahead as it attempts to regenerate not only the
1.3 million jobs lost during the recession but also create additional jobs
needed for new entrants into the job market over the past two-and-a-half
years
A Michigan couple is crying unsportsmanlike conduct after their
6-year-old daughter was removed from a flag football
cheerleading team because they complained that one of the team's chants was too
risque.
"Our backs ache, our skirts are too tight, we shake our booties
from left to right."But instead of seeing their concerns with the cheer
resolved, the Tesches saw their little girl booted from the team.
Washington (CNN) – Thirty-one House Democrats, most of whom face tough
re-election bids this fall, have signed a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi
and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer urging them to extend expiring tax breaks for all income levels, including the wealthy. The letter–written by Utah Rep. Jim Matheson, Illinois Rep. Melissa Bean, Virginia Rep. Glenn Nye and Michigan Rep. Gary Peters–states that after listening to economists, small businesses and families over recent weeks they are concerned that "raising any taxes right now could negatively impact economic growth."

Obama campaigned on the promise to end torture and shut down the gulag, but
the infamous prison camp at Guantanamo remains, trials for accused terrorists
have yet to be conducted and the "extraordinary renditions" reportedly continue.
(We don't know for sure because they're done in secret.) Equally troubling, the
White House reportedly has authorized U.S. intelligence agencies to kill Anwar
Awlaki, an Islamic clergyman turned jihadist who was born and raised in the U.S.
and is now hiding in Yemen. The summary execution of a U.S. citizen is something not even Bush and Cheney authorized.
'As a consequence of us getting 30 million additional people health
care, at the margins that's going to increase our costs—we knew that," President
Obama said at his press conference Friday in response to a question about rising
health spending.
That wasn't how he sold the plan, but, anyway, that's a truism.
Here's another: The White House was always going to blame insurance companies
for any cost increases, even when its own policies cause them.
Witness Kathleen Sebelius's Thursday letter to America's Health
Insurance Plans, the industry trade group—a thuggish message even by her
standards. The Health and Human Services secretary wrote that some insurers have been attributing part of their 2011 premium increases to ObamaCare and warned that "there will be zero tolerance for this type of misinformation and
unjustified rate increases."
But some in the invited audience, handpicked by Democratic state
officials, were unconvinced. Jackie Capasso, 50, works in the accounting
department of a manufacturing facility outside Cleveland that remains open but
has downsized significantly and went through a closure scare. Capasso said she
has never voted for a Republican for president and normally votes for Democratic
candidates. But not this year.
Capasso said she is expecting to vote for former Republican congressman John Kasich for governor over Democratic incumbent Ted Strickland.
"We've lost way too many jobs, and whether it's right or wrong he's going to
take the fall for it," Capasso said of Strickland.
I have written extensively in many outlets including Pajamas Media
about the outright lawlessness emanating from the Civil Rights Division under
Eric Holder’s leadership at the Justice Department. Whether it involves
rewriting military voter protections, refusing to sue defendants because of
their race, or ignoring the Motor Voter requirements, the rule of law is
endangered by this DOJ. The latest example may be the Division’s defense of a
lawsuit filed by Shelby County, Alabama, challenging the constitutionality of
Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA).
CHURCHVILLE, VA—3 Billion and Counting is a new documentary film on the
awful human cost of banning DDT. The film’s producer, medical doctor Rutledge
Taylor, circled the tropical world, finding that malaria has claimed some three
billion human lives throughout history—and the toll of needless deaths is
continuing to mount by perhaps 1.5 million per year. Moreover, it permanently
debilitates millions more. Taylor says malaria treatment is a “tangle of red
tape, misguided prevention policies and treatment that is ineffective in the
face of continual re-infection.” Above all, he found “willful deafness to the
pleas of local populations to help them eradicate the mosquitoes that deliver
the deadly cargo.” (Dennis Avery, CFP)
President Barack Obama boldly proclaims, “The buck stops here!” But,
whenever his policies are criticized, he acts as if the buck stopped with George
W. Bush.
The party line that we are likely to be hearing from now until the
November elections is that Obama “inherited” the big federal budget deficits and
that he has to “clean up the mess” left in the economy by the Republicans. This
may convince those who want to be convinced, but it will not stand up under
scrutiny.
No President of the United States can create either a budget
deficit or a budget surplus. All spending bills originate in the House of
Representatives and all taxes are voted into law by Congress.
Drunk-dialing can get you in trouble with your girlfriend.
Drunk e-mailing the President of the United States, however, can
get you banned from the country - permanently.
That's what apparently happened to Luke Angel, a British teen who
sent a curse-laden message to the White House directed at President
Obama.
"The individual had sent an email to the White House which was full
of abusive and threatening language," a police spokesperson told the British
newspaper, Bedfordshire. On Sunday, Officers visited Angel at his home in Silsoe, a town in Bedfordshire, England, during which time the teen admitted to sending the
e-mail, although he couldn't remember what he wrote.
"I don't remember exactly what I wrote as I was drunk," he told The Sun. "But I think I called Barack Obama a pr---. It was silly - the sort of thing you do when you're a teenager and have had a few."

During a July 14, 2009, address in Warren, Mich., Obama said, “Now, my
administration has a job to do, as well, and that job is to get this economy
back on its feet. That's my job. And it’s a job I gladly accept. I love these
folks who helped get us in this mess and then suddenly say, ‘Well, this is
Obama’s economy.’ That’s fine. Give it to me. My job is to solve
problems, not to stand on the sidelines and carp and gripe.”
Democrats head into the midterm elections facing a tidal wave
of bad news and ominous portents.
In the latest Wall Street Journal/NBC poll, two thirds believe the economy has yet to hit bottom and two thirds of those would prefer a Republican Congress. Sixty percent said the performance of the current Congress, dominated by Democrats, was below average or one of the worst. The Obama administration scored poorly on all the major issues — health care, the war in Afghanistan, the economy and the budget deficit.
For Democrats, the picture is similarly gloomy in other polls,
which consistently show the Republicans holding a solid advantage on intensity.
Real Clear Politics, which compiles an average of major surveys, said the GOP edge on the generic congressional ballot was 6.4 percent, a new high.
Forthcoming for public release shortly will be my extensive study of
the Obamacare legislation, "The Obamacare Disaster: An Appraisal of the Patient
Protection and Affordable Care Act" (Heartland Policy StudyNo. 128, The
Heartland Institute, August 2010), available shortly at the Heartland Institute website. Following Nancy Pelosi's dictum that we will have to pass it first to know
what's in it.
The bottom line is that you will lose your health care under this
legislation, if not your job, your country as they bankrupt America, and maybe
ultimately your life or the life of a loved one.
From today’s NYT editorial on the Justice Department’s decision not to bring charges against former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay comes this gem:
Mr. DeLay, the Texas Republican who had been the House majority leader, crowed that he had been “found innocent.” But many of Mr. DeLay’s actions remain legal only because lawmakers have chosen not to criminalize them.
Well, yes. That’s the way it works.
ASPEN COLORADO: Hollywood director James Cameron challenged three high
profile global warming skeptics to a public debate at a global warming and
energy conference. But Cameron backed out of the debate at the last minute after
environmentalists "came out of the woodwork" to warn him not to engage in a
debate with skeptics because it was not in his best interest.
Cameron challenged Andrew Breitbart, Climate Depot's Marc Morano and
filmmaker Ann McElhinney of 'Not Evil Just Wrong.' The debate was already in the
program for the Aspen American Renewable Energy Day (AREDAY) summit. The website program described the agreed to debate as “AREDAY Climate Change
Debate: Reality or Fiction?"
After setting up the public global warming debate, Cameron
and his negotiator then changed formats multiple times and initially
said it would be open to the media and then said he would only participate if it
was private with no recording devices. The skeptics agreed to all the changes.
According to AREDAY organizers, activist Joseph Romm of Climate Progress urged Cameron not to go ahead with the debate as well.
Racism? And that's what Waters and Rangel are doing now, the former explicitly, the
latter implicitly. Both are demanding an immediate trial, before the November
elections, which would hammer even more nails into the Democratic coffin. In
effect, they're saying, "Let us off the hook or we'll take you all down with us in a racial spectacle."
As in recent polls, Americans are split on President Barack Obama's job
performance, with 47% approving and 48% disapproving. But a majority disapproves of his performance on the economy. And six in 10, including 83%
of independents and a quarter of Democrats, say they are only somewhat or not at all confident that Mr. Obama has the right policies to improve it.
As Stuart Taylor put it in 2008:
The pretense of many Democrats that this crisis is
altogether a Republican creation is simplistic and dangerous. It is simplistic
because Democrats have been a big part of the problem, in part
by supporting governmental distortions of the marketplace through
mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, whose reckless lending
practices necessitated a $200 billion government rescue [in September 2008]. ... Fannie and Freddie appear to have played a major role in causing the
current crisis, in part because their quasi-governmental status
violated basic principles of a healthy free enterprise system by allowing them
to privatize profit while socializing risk.
