I’m from the government and I’m here to help

Killing Manufacturing

….Have a great idea? See a viable opportunity? Want to build a product or establish a manufacturing plant? Go see your local government officials. You will find the "go for it" attitude replaced with, Manufacturing??? Why do you want to consider such a dirty business? Why would you want to put your fellow citizens at risk? What would we do if someone were to get hurt? How could we possibly live with ourselves if, God forbid, some kind of particle escaped into the air or blew into a river? How could you live with yourself if your employees weren't all being treated equally and being supplied with incredibly attractive wages and benefits?

I WOULD LIKE TO RELATE MY RECENT EXPERIENCE TRYING TO START A CARBON FIBRE MANUFACTURING COMPANY IN A NORTHEASTERN U.S. STATE. After MEETING FOR THREE WEEKS WITH THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OFFICES of the State and City, it was determined that AFTER I LOCATED AND ACQUIRED A FACILITY, AT MY COST AND RISK, EVEN IF IT WERE PROPERLY ZONED, IT WOULD HAVE TO BE APPROVED FOR A SPECIAL USE EXCEPTION. Thereafter we were told to BUDGET IN EXCESS OF $300K FOR PRE-APPROVAL EPA, environmental, and other studies. THE STUDIES WOULD TAKE ABOUT 6 MONTHS AT MINIMUM -- with no guarantee of a successful outcome. Even if we were approved, and in spite of the fact that at opening we would be hiring approximately 25 technically competent people in a high unemployment region, we would have to go to the Union hall and negotiate a trades contract before hiring the first employee. I would be forced to unionize and hire more expensive, "senior union members." I am not allowed to go to Craigslist and hire younger, entry level trainees. My cost of operation becomes higher before even opening my doors and I have no choice in this matter. Unbelievable!!!

Even if I am willing to take the time, spend the money, and successfully navigate the bureaucratic hurdles, WHAT ADDITIONAL RISKS DO I FACE? How about this: OSHA ARBITRARILY DECIDES I'M NOT IN COMPLIANCE WITH ONE CLAUSE IN THEIR MULTI-THOUSAND PAGE REGULATORY BIBLE. OR, AN EMPLOYEE-UNION MEMBER DECIDES HE IS NOT BEING TREATED FAIRLY or that the benefits package is not equal to that of federal or state employees, and files a grievance How about THE EPA DECIDING, RETROACTIVELY, THAT IN THE EVENT OF A POWER OUTAGE THERE IS A CHANCE MY FACTORY MIGHT LEAK A "TOXIC" SUBSTANCE? I will be sued, shut down and possibly prosecuted criminally.

NOW, CONSIDER MY EXPERIENCE THE LAST TIME I VISITED CHINA. I was escorted by the governor of Tianjin State to one of his new cities and shown the process to open a manufacturing facility. I was led into a room with a series of desks. You start at the first desk where you present your plan. Thereafter you proceed from one to the next obtaining approvals or agree to modifications on the spot until at the last table where you are shown what lots and buildings are available that best suit your needs and the price of each. THE TOTAL TIMELINE FOR PERMITS, FROM BEGINNING TO APPROVAL, TAKES ABOUT 3 HOURS.

Many on the left lament our lack of manufacturing jobs in the USA. Here’s a different point of view of what is killing the goose that lays the golden egg.  Yet the same people who are complaining about the lack of jobs are the same ones who would defend all the hurdles the author encountered here.

Fishermen Say Regulations Destroying Industry

FISHERMEN ON NEW HAMPSHIRE'S SEACOAST ARE WARNING THAT NEW FISHING REGULATIONS COULD DESTROY THEIR INDUSTRY AND HAVE ALREADY CAUSED THEM SEVERE EMOTIONAL STRESS.

The U.S. Department of Commerce has sent a team to Seabrook to look at the effects of the new regulations.

"IF THEY DON'T DO SOMETHING TO MODIFY THE FISHING REGULATIONS, WE WON'T HAVE A FISHING INDUSTRY ON THE SEACOAST, IS WHAT IT BOILS DOWN TO," said Hampton Town Manager Fred Welch.

Many in the fishing industry said they want the federal team to do more than its stated task of creating an economic development assessment report. The team is spending three days in Seabrook and visiting five other New England fishing towns.

The new regulations are known as "catch-share." The team said they are not there to look at possible changes to the rules but rather to see what effects they are having.

"What the economic challenges are and, maybe in the future, what the economic opportunities are for the community, and we're putting together a report sometime in the summer based on what we hear, as far as the challenges and opportunities for economic development in the community," said Bryan Borlik of the Department of Commerce.

More regulations that destroy jobs.

Is the President’s UBL bounce over?

I think it is. Rasmussen’s poll of likely voters had his Approval Rating which had declined to a -7%, increased today to -12%. In the meantime the percentage of voters who at least somewhat approved of the president's performance which had gotten up to 51% declined to only 48%. That despite the story after this one.

Obama Hits 60% Approval — with an Asterisk

According to the AP, Obama’s approval rating is the highest it’s been in two years. But they had to massage the numbers pretty vigorously to get that result. Ed Morrisey:

THE DEM/REP/IND BREAKDOWN IN THIS POLL IS 46/29/4, as AP assigned most of the leaners to the parties. THAT IS A 17-POINT GAP, MORE THAN TWICE WHAT WAS SEEN IN THE 2008 ACTUAL POPULAR VOTE THAT ELECTED OBAMA. It only gets worse when independents are assigned properly. When taking out the leaners, the split becomes — I’m not kidding — 35/18/27. Oh, and another 20% “don’t know.” That’s significantly worse than the March poll, in which the proper D/R/I was 29/20/34, and far beyond their post-midterm sample of 31/28/26. It’s pretty easy to get Obama to 60% when Republicans are undersampled by almost half.

I stand by my comments regarding the UBL bounce. It’s over for Obama and we can expect to see his numbers back in the forties.

Obama the Uniter in at the Mexican border

Delving anew into an explosive issue, President Barack Obama stood near the border with Mexico on Tuesday and declared it more secure than ever, TRYING TO BUILD PRESSURE ON REPUBLICANS TO TAKE ON A COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION OVERHAUL -- AND EAGERLY WORKING TO SHOW VITAL HISPANIC VOTERS THAT HE IS NOT THE ONE STANDING IN THE WAY.

Countering Republican calls to focus on border security before moving to a comprehensive overhaul, Obama said their demands have been more than met by his administration but "they'll never be satisfied."

On his first trip to the U.S.-Mexico border since becoming president, Obama boasted of increasing border patrol agents, nearing completion of a border fence, and screening more cargo.

"WE HAVE GONE ABOVE AND BEYOND WHAT WAS REQUESTED BY THE VERY REPUBLICANS WHO SAID THEY SUPPORTED BROADER REFORM AS LONG AS WE GOT SERIOUS ABOUT ENFORCEMENT," Obama said. "But even though we've answered these concerns, I gotta say I suspect there are still going to be some who are trying to move the goal posts on us one more time."

"MAYBE THEY'LL NEED A MOAT," Obama said mockingly to laughter from the crowd. "MAYBE THEY'LL WANT ALLIGATORS IN THE MOAT."

I thought he was supposed to be post-partisan. This president shows us that not only is he inexperienced and incompetent, but he is thin skinned and nasty.

Obama's Campaign Disclosure Executive Order Proposal

HOUSE DEMOCRATIC WHIP STENY HOYER (D-MD.) SAID HE OPPOSES A PROPOSED EXECUTIVE ORDER FROM PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA THAT WOULD REQUIRE COMPANIES TO DISCLOSE CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS when applying for federal contracts. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said he also is against the order.

“I am not in agreement with the administration on that issue,” Hoyer told reporters at his weekly press briefing on Tuesday. “It's not a requirement now. I don't think it ought to be a requirement."

CANTOR EXPRESSED SIMILAR OPPOSITION, SAYING HE AGREED WITH HOYER THAT POLITICAL DONATIONS SHOULD NOT BE A PART OF THE FEDERAL CONTRACTING PROCESS…

There is too much of a possibility of shenanigans with this proposal. Hoyer and Cantor are right.

How Obama will be defeated in 2012

…But THE WEAK, HIGH-UNEMPLOYMENT ECONOMY REMAINS HIS ACHILLES' HEEL and his lowest job approval number. Just 37 percent approve of Mr. Obama's handling of the economy, according to an NBC News poll out this week. That's down from 40 percent in January.

This is the pivotal issue on which Mr. Obama will win or lose a second term and right now, the American people and most economists do not see things improving anytime soon. JUST 31 PERCENT EXPECT THE ECONOMY TO GET BETTER IN THE NEXT YEAR, AND ECONOMISTS AT THE FEDERAL RESERVE DO NOT SEE UNEMPLOYMENT FALLING TO NORMAL LEVELS UNTIL 2013.

Two bleak numbers tell the story about the Obama economy. The unemployment rate last month rose to 9 percent, despite the 268,000 private-sector jobs created in April. The economy barely grew in the past three months, with the nation's economic growth rate falling from a modest 3 percent in the fourth quarter of 2010 to this year's anemic 1.8 percent from January to March.

ECONOMIC GROWTH THAT FALLS BELOW 2 PERCENT IS NOT ENOUGH TO MAKE EVEN A DENT IN THE JOBLESS RATE, which rose last month because many long-term unemployed workers who dropped out of the work force began looking for jobs again and were counted in the labor pool….

Don’t believe the pundits who say Obama sewed up his second term getting UBL. Any bounce from this will fade quickly.

The Toomey Budget: Another Republican Alternative

Pennsylvania's Sen. Pat Toomey, who in just six months has asserted himself as a major player on the debt, UNVEILED A PLAN HE SAID WILL BALANCE THE BUDGET WITHIN NINE YEARS WITHOUT TOUCHING SOCIAL SECURITY OR OVERHAULING MEDICARE.

The freshman Republican led a press conference Tuesday flanked by South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, among others. He presented his budget like evidence at a trial — his proof that the government need not spend beyond its means.

"SIMPLY PUT, DEFICITS ARE NOT INEVITABLE; THEY CAN BE STOPPED IF WE IN CONGRESS HAVE THE WILL TO STOP THEM," TOOMEY SAID.

Toomey's plan would cut non-defense discretionary spending to 2006 levels — pre-2008 stimulus — but leave the details of where exactly to cut to appropriators. Toomey does not touch Social Security, makes just slight changes to Medicare and converts Medicaid from an entitlement to a state block-grant program….

Egypt will be dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood

There are a lot of complaints about the mass media not reporting important developments. But what about when a major newspaper publishes a revelation of huge global importance and no one pays attention?

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, AMR MOUSSA, THE MOST IMPORTANT AND POPULAR POLITICIAN IN EGYPT AND ALMOST CERTAIN TO BE THE NEXT PRESIDENT, STATED THAT THE MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD IS GOING TO DOMINATE THE COUNTRY’S PARLIAMENT. This isn’t me saying this, it’s Amr Moussa:

It is inevitable that parliamentary elections in September will usher in a legislature led by a bloc of Islamists, with the Brotherhood at the forefront.

Might this not be a matter of importance for the U.S. government? Shouldn’t this be a lead story in every newspaper and on every television show? Why isn’t there a public debate about what the United States and European governments will do if (when?) this happens?

The biggest news you haven’t heard. So when and why did Obama lose Egypt?

Why the New York Times Gets Everything Wrong: It’s the Left-Wing Bias

The wonderful parody in Slate today, “THE NEW YORK TIMES: THE FINAL EDITION,” got me to thinking about the “paper of record” once again. THE PARODY DEFTLY CAPTURES ITS IRRELEVANCE, THE POMPOSITY OF ITS REPORTERS’ STORIES, THE GRANDIOSITY OF ITS OP-ED WRITERS, AND WHAT UNDOUBTEDLY THE PAPER WOULD BE LIKE WERE THEY RUNNING THEIR VERY LAST EDITION!

If William McGowan has to write a new chapter for the paper edition of his book Gray Lady Down, he won’t have one bit of trouble coming up with lots of new material. As the paper steadily moves downhill, its editors and writers keep coming up with new material, which they will be handing to him on a silver platter.

There’s no secret anymore as to why the paper has become worse than it ever was. The editors and writers are on the political left; and THEY ARE POMPOUS ENOUGH TO THINK THAT SINCE EVERYONE THEY KNOW THINKS THE SAME WAY, WHAT THEY ARE WRITING IS OBJECTIVE. This is not to say that its bias is a relatively new thing. It’s just that in the paper’s heyday, you could find relatively straightforward top-notch reporting. But even then, on certain issues, there was very little difference between the editorial side and that of the reporters.

and here’s the link to the parody http://www.slate.com/id/2293595/

The NY TIMES was once a pretty good paper. It’s nothing more than a left wing propaganda sheet anymore.

The Lesson Plan

One day in 1967, a Palo Alto high school student asks his history teacher how the German people could have missed the signs of the ongoing genocide being perpetrated by the Nazis. This innocent question ignites an idea, and teacher Ron Jones launches a classroom “simulation,” or experiment, to illustrate how good Germans -how anyone – could fall prey to totalitarian thinking.

FORTY YEARS LATER, PHILIP NEEL, ONE OF THE STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATED IN THAT EXPERIMENT DUBBED THE THIRD WAVE, HAS PRODUCED A DOCUMENTARY, THE LESSON PLAN, FEATURING INTERVIEWS WITH STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATED, AND WITH TEACHER RON JONES HIMSELF.

JONES REORGANIZED HIS CLASSROOM THAT WEEK INTO A SIMULATION OF A PROTOTYPICAL FASCIST YOUTH GROUP. He enforced physical discipline and uniformity in the students’ posture and speech per his first-day dictum, “STRENGTH THROUGH DISCIPLINE.” He meant it to end there, he now avers, but students were eager for more. He added more simplistic, effective sloganeering on the following days: strength through community, through action, through unity and finally through pride. STRENGTH THROUGH COMMUNITY MEANT, FOR INSTANCE, THAT STUDENTS WERE TO SHARE GRADES. TOP STUDENTS HELPED THE LOWER STUDENTS. Jones was heartened by the increased level of participation of the weaker students, while he banished to the library for the remainder of the semester some more successful students – who of course resented lowering their grades so students who did not do the work could get higher grades…..

An interesting article which shows you how people can be seduced as were the Germans by the Nazis in the 1930s. Scary as well.

Speech by Vaclav Klaus

The GWD, this new incarnation of environmentalism, is not a monolithic concept that could be easily structured and summarized. It is a flexible, rather inconsistent, LOOSELY CONNECTED CASCADE OF ARGUMENTS, which is why it has been so successfully ESCAPING THE SCRUTINY OF SCIENCE. It comfortably dwells in the easy and self-protecting world of false interdisciplinarity (which is nothing else than the absence of discipline). A similar approach was used by the exponents of one of the forerunners of GWD, of THE LIMITS TO GROWTH DOCTRINE. Some of its protagonists were the same.

What follows is my attempt to summarize my reading of this doctrine:

1. It starts with the claim that there is AN UNDISPUTED AND UNDISPUTABLE, EMPIRICALLY CONFIRMED, STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT, GLOBAL, NOT REGIONAL OR LOCAL, WARMING.....

5. The GWD exponents promise us, however, that there is a hope: THE ONGOING TEMPERATURE INCREASE CAN BE REVERSED BY THE REDUCTION OF CO2 EMISSIONS[5];

6. They also know how to do it. They want to organize the CO2 emissions reduction by means of directives (or commands) issued by the institutions of “global governance”. They forget to tell us that THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE WITHOUT UNDERMINING DEMOCRACY, INDEPENDENCE OF INDIVIDUAL COUNTRIES, HUMAN FREEDOM, ECONOMIC PROSPERITY AND A CHANCE TO ELIMINATE POVERTY IN THE WORLD. They pretend that the CO2 emissions reduction will bring benefits which will exceed its costs....

.... IF SOMEONE WANTS TO REDUCE CO2 EMISSIONS, HE MUST EITHER EXPECT A REVOLUTION IN ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY (WHICH DETERMINES EMISSIONS INTENSITY) OR MUST START ORGANIZING A WORLD-WIDE ECONOMIC DECLINE. Revolutions in economic efficiency – at least in relevant and meaningful time horizons – were never realized in the past and will not happen in the future either. It was the recent financial and economic crisis, not a technological miracle (nor preachings by Mr Pachauri) what brought about a slight reduction of CO2 emissions.

THE GWD ADHERENTS SHOULD EXPLAIN TO THE PEOPLE WORLDWIDE THAT THEY CONSIDER THE ECONOMIC DECLINE INEVITABLE AND DESIRABLE.

The last paragraph I quote is the money statement. All the proponents of GWD (Global Warming Doctrine) either fail to mention this or close their eyes really tight and wish it away.
