It's Romney and its on

What’s new Today

Story #1tells of Tuesday’s victory by Mitt Romney.   #2 is an article by Hugh Hewett and his assessment of Romney.  #3 speculates on who a President Romney might put on the Supreme Court.  #4 looks at the parallels between the rise of Fascism and today.  #5 reveals an attack on the family farm by the Obama Labor Department.  #6 is about Jon Corzine while #7 reveals the hypocrisy in the Obama’s current attacks on the Republicans.

Today’s thoughts

Watching Romney’s speech last night I was struck at how upbeat it was.  Contrasting that to the negative messages of the Democrats tells me the Dems are in for a thumping in November.

There are rules of thumb you can often use to see what is happening.  Here’s one for this election.  With more than six months to go, the rhetoric on the left is shrill as sure sign of big trouble for them.  From Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s the Republicans want to take away women healthcare, to David Axelrod’s Republicans campaign of terror we are seeing the left realize how much trouble they are in and are reacting exactly the wrong way.  Six months of negativity will drive down their numbers, not the Republicans.

Now that the war on terror is over, does that mean we can privatize TSA again?

Bob Kerrey has just released a video condemning going to war with Iran.  A good move except no one is proposing we go to war with Iran.  It appears 2012 will have the Democrats condemning things the Republicans aren’t proposing (ie. banning contraception, poisoning the air and water, etc.)

1.  Romney wins: A Better America Begins Tonight

Mitt Romney, whose first run for the White House ended in failure and disappointment, prepared to lay claim to the Republican presidential nomination Tuesday night and turn his full focus to what will likely be a competitive and intensely fought general election contest with President Obama….

“To all of the thousands of good and decent Americans I’ve met who want nothing more than a better chance, a fighting chance, to all of you, I have a simple message,” Romney said, according to excerpts of the speech released early by the campaign. “Hold on a little longer. A better America begins tonight.”

Arguing that Obama has failed in office, he added, “Because he has failed, he will run a campaign of diversions, distractions and distortions. That kind of campaign may have worked at another place and in a different time — but not here and not now.” Then, in a twist on former President Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign message, he added, “It’s still about the economy, and we’re not stupid…

The contrast between Romney’s message and the Democrats is stark.  Today he showed he was the candidate of hope and change and that change isn’t to fundamentally change America, but to become a better America.

2.  Hugh Hewitt:  A very strong candidate

The zombie narrative of a brokered convention is dead, and Politico is having to lay off the brokered convention team.

Romney is the GOP nominee and a very strong one who has emerged from the primary process focused on the economy and in a dead heat with the president.

Romney's speech last night was the best he has given, and it must reflect the investment of time available to such efforts when the nominee can focus and practice.

When former McCain Campaign manager Steve Schmidt appeared on my program on April 27, 2009 to discuss the 2008 campaign, he made a memorable comment about Romney.

"I thought he was a very scary opponent looking from the other side of the table in that he was almost like a learning organism at the end," Schmidt said about the former Massachusetts governor. "He just kept getting better week by week by week, and kept becoming stronger."

That capacity to grow in the role was on display last night and it must have opened some eyes even wider in Chicago and inside the Beltway. And a hat tip to whomever helped the candidate polish the draft, as it was a very good speech…

As you read this blog you will see how delighted I am by having Mitt Romney as the Republican nominee.   He is smart, smooth and will be just what the country needs after four years of Barack Obama.  He will actually focus on the economy and things will get better.  I don’t expect him to do much regarding social issues, but this election shouldn’t be about social issues.

3.  Who would Romney put on the Supreme Court?

Now that Mitt Romney is the presumptive Republican nominee for president, the names of people he might appoint to SCOTUS are starting to roll off the tongues of conservative activists, lawyers and former Republican administration aides.

While conservatives caution that talk is mere guesswork, an examination of Romney's record as Massachusetts governor and statements he made on the presidential campaign trail can help shape an early list of frontrunners should he defeat President Barack Obama in the November 6 election, and should he be given the chance to fill a vacancy on the nine-member bench…

CLEMENT A FAVORITE

Paul Clement
, who served as U.S. solicitor general under President George W. Bush and is now a lawyer in private practice, is the favorite of many conservatives. Clement argued last month for the Supreme Court to strike down Obama's 2010 healthcare law, and he is defending laws that ban same-sex marriage and that target illegal immigrants. Clement, 45, would be "at the top of any short list right now," said Curt Levey, executive director of the Committee for Justice, a group that advocates for conservative nominees….

It’s early to talk about this, but interesting nonetheless.

4.   Vigilante President, Liberal Fascist

On the heels of such paeans to vigilante governance as this and this, and various cris de coeur that democracy is standing in the way of what was indeed sold, in the closing days of the 2008 campaign, as “fundamental transformation” of said democracy, I was struck by a passage while reading a book last night otherwise unrelated in any way to current politics. But it led to a very disturbing conclusion.

The book is Tobruk by Peter Fitzsimons. Explaining the rise of fascism, Fitzsimons wrote, “there was a growing belief that ordinary democracy could not work anymore — because no one could achieve a majority of popular support.” This was startling. It sounded so…familiar.

From Thomas Friedman and Barack Obama we hear the same thing: those other people voted into office in an historic sweep, on a campaign promising to obstruct our plans, why, they’re obstructing our plans! We can’t get a majority for anything (…that we want and the majority don’t). Time to tinker with the system, test its limits, legislate through rules and bully citizens and of course judges deciding cases where people are calling us on it all dared sue.

http://pjmedia.com/tatler/2012/04/25/vigilante-president-liberal-fascist/

Obama and the Democrats are certainly doing this.  From recess appointments when the Senate wasn’t in recess, to EPA regulations that are passed based on studies that don’t pass the EPA’s guidelines, the Democrats are stretching the rules to the limits.

5.  Obama’s Labor Department Attacks Family Farms

A proposal from the Obama administration to prevent children from doing farm chores has drawn plenty of criticism from rural-district member of Congress. But now it’s attracting barbs from farm kids themselves.

The Department of Labor is poised to put the finishing touches on a rule that would apply child-labor laws to children working on family farms, prohibiting them from performing a list of jobs on their own families’ land.

Under the rules, children under 18 could no longer work “in the storing, marketing and transporting of farm product raw materials.”

“Prohibited places of employment,” a Department press release read, “would include country grain elevators, grain bins, silos, feed lots, stockyards, livestock exchanges and livestock auctions.”

The new regulations, first proposed August 31 by Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, would also revoke the government’s approval of safety training and certification taught by independent groups like 4-H and FFA, replacing them instead with a 90-hour federal government training course….

Why liberals tell you that the Republicans want to poison the air because they talk about reducing government regulations, remember this.  This government seem intent on destroying the small family farm.

6.  Obama’s Tainted Bundler

…Under Corzine, MF Global lost well over $1 billion, and I don’t mean in the profit/loss sense. I mean it was physically misplaced and Corzine cannot account for where it went. The Justice Department is investigating, and news-media accounts suggest a criminal prosecution is likely. Somewhat better late than never, Gensler recused himself after MF Global went bankrupt. So, why the trip down memory lane? Because the Obama campaign just announced that Corzine is still on the list of top-tier bundlers for the Obama reelection campaign. Corzine has raised more than half a million dollars for Obama.

Obama is constantly denouncing “millionaires and billionaires” for playing by their own rules. It’s true that the campaign told one reporter in February that it wouldn’t take more money from Corzine himself, but it’s been happy to let the man solicit donations for Obama even as Corzine is under investigation by Obama’s own Justice Department. How cozy. Tell me, what’s the point of the Occupy Wall Street movement, and its countless sympathizers in the Democratic party and the media, if that’s good enough? Whatever happened to changing how Washington works?

We’re about to enter a very long campaign in which an apparently squeaky-clean Mitt Romney is going to be demonized for his success and dragged through the gutter. Meanwhile, Obama took cash from a true denizen of the gutter.

How do you spell Democrat?  H-y-p-o-c-r-i-s-y.

7.  And some more Hypocrisy regarding campaign tactics

Watch what Obama said last year and compare it to what appears to be the democrats’ tactics for this campaign (the president’s remarks begins at 1 minute 26 seconds).

This and that from the weekend

What’s new today

Our # 1 tells us about how in Wisconsin they are removing a requirement for state aid to disadvantaged student that the applicant must be a minority.  #2 is an video of Jon Corzine on the Daily Show where he complains about the government not supplying enough oversight on Wall Street.  #3 tells us of Ron Paul’s remarks today that he will not make a third party run for the presidency.  #4 is an interesting article in which the author takes apart the idea that only a small minority of Occupy Wall Street are violent.  To the author dismisses those who say the peaceful demonstrators are victims.  He claims they aren’t victims, but enablers of the violence.  Finally in #5 we are looking at a vote on restricting public unions right to bargain in Ohio.

1.   An Outbreak of Equality in Wisconsin

… a Democrat there has surprised, shocked, and angered her party colleagues by introducing a measure in the legislature to eliminate race or ethnicity as factors in awarding state education grants.

“The bill at the heart of the latest debate,” the Associated Press reported.

Originally made largely technical changes to a $4.4 million program that extends between $600 and $1,800 grants to the most needy and educationally disadvantaged students attending college in Wisconsin. About 4,300 students qualify every year.

APPLICANTS MUST BE POOR AND A NONTRADITIONAL STUDENT. To be a nontraditional student, the applicant must meet one of several criteria including being in prison, a first-generation college attendee or black, Indian, Hispanic or Hmong.

THE AMENDMENT REMOVED BEING A MINORITY AS ONE OF THE QUALIFIERS FOR THE GRANTS. It was adopted on a 57-34 vote with all Democrats voting against it except [the amendment’s author, Milwaukee Rep. Peggy] Krusick.

“The proposal,” the Associated Press article continued, “made around 11 p.m. Tuesday, elicited a furious response from Democratic opponents."

That fury is quite revealing about how most elected Democrats understand (or don’t) equality these days:

• According to Rep. Tamara Grigsby, D-Milwaukee, “WHAT [THE PROPOSAL] IS IS RACISM IN ITS HIGHEST INSTITUTIONAL LEVEL.” Moreover, she charged.“You are making it plain as day that your priority is to get the minorities out of the system.

• Rep. Brett Hulsey, D-Madison, “called the proposal a ‘RACIST RACE TO THE BOTTOM’ that will result in minorities losing access to jobs.”

• Rep. Kelda Helen Roys, another Madison Democrat, pronounced herself  “disgusted by what happened in the Assembly….”

… I THINK IT’S QUITE USEFUL AND INSTRUCTIVE TO SEE THE DEPTH OF THE DEMOCRATS’ DEVOTION TO RACIAL PREFERENCES and the anger, bitterness, and sense of betrayal they express when one of their own surprisingly demonstrates a lingering commitment to the principle of colorblind equality…

http://www.mindingthecampus.com/forum/2011/11/an_outbreak_of_equality_in_wis.html

It is sad that the left thinks that discrimination in the name of antidiscrimination will actually work.

2.   Jon Corzine on the Daily Show

An interesting video clip with Jon Corzine telling Stewart that Wall Street needs more oversight.  You can see it at about the five minute mark.  Of course with what has happened at MF Global you have more than a touch of irony.  Also interesting is what he says we need to do to correct the economy and then endorses BHO as talking about doing the things he says we need to do.  Also ironic.

http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-october-23-2008/jon-corzine

3.   Paul:  ‘No Intention to Make Third Party Run

Ron Paul said today he has “no intention” of making a third-party run if he is not the GOP nominee.

“I HAVE NO INTENTION OF DOING THAT,” he said on Fox News Sunday in an interview this morning. Asked why not, Paul said, “BECAUSE I DON’T WANT TO DO IT.”

BUT HE WOULDN’T COMMIT TO SUPPORTING THE GOP NOMINEE IN THE GENERAL ELECTION. “If they believe in expanding the wars, if they don’t believe in looking at the Federal Reserve, if they don’t believe in real cuts, if they don’t believe in deregulations and a better tax system, it would defy everything I believe in [to endorse],” Paul said, noting that he didn’t want his supporters to think that all they had done was “for naught” because he ultimately backed someone who didn’t agree with him on key issues….

http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/282371/paul-no-intention-make-third-party-run-katrina-trinko

There goes a hope that the liberal had.  Paul might have made a difference for their candidate.

4.  Occupy Oakland’s Real Victims

Councilman Ignacio De La Fuente is sick of hearing about how peaceful the majority of protesters were. "THE REASON THE MINORITY'S HERE," HE SPUTTERED, IS "THE MAJORITY'S HERE."

THE MAJORITY OF OCCUPY PROTESTERS AREN'T VICTIMS; THEY'RE ENABLERS.

There was no positive political message. The goal of the general strike was supposed to be to "liberate Oakland and shut down the 1 percent." That's not positive. They want to shut down the city, but they don't want to get anything done. THE STRIKE DIDN'T HURT WALL STREET BANKERS OR OTHER BIG SHOTS AMONG THE TOP 1 PERCENT; IT CUT INTO THE POCKETS OF BARISTAS AND TRUCK DRIVERS.

Free speech does not mean free camping….

….Free speech rights do not include a right to trample the rights of others or keep other people from making a living.

Do not think that this general strike only cut into business activities in Oakland for one day. Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce head Joseph Haraburda has seen the lasting damage these actions have inflicted on Oakland's reputation as a place to do business. HE COUNTS THREE COMMERCIAL TENANT CANCELLATIONS, INCLUDING ONE FOR AN OPERATION THAT WOULD HAVE HIRED 100 EMPLOYEES….

Free speech does not mean you can destroy other’s livelihood, a park, etc.  I think the author said it well.  The majority of Occupiers aren’t victims, they are enablers.

5.   Ohio Referendum on Tuesday

On Tuesday, OHIO VOTERS WILL DECIDE WHETHER TO REPEAL LEGISLATION PASSED BY REPUBLICANS IN MARCH THAT WOULD SEVERELY RESTRICT COLLECTIVE BARGAINING RIGHTS for hundreds of thousands of public employees in the state.

Unlike in Wisconsin, where unions lost a similar battle earlier this year, the fight over Senate Bill 5 in Ohio is unfolding very differently. First, progressive groups forced a referendum on the law with a massive signature drive.

THINGS ARE NOW LOOKING ROSY FOR THE PROGRESSIVE SIDE, despite some lingering concerns among labor strategists. A recent poll showed that the labor side of Issue 2, the ballot measure that would repeal the bill, is up by 25 points. (A “no” vote would repeal the bill.)

http://www.salon.com/2011/11/05/labor_poised_for_big_win_in_ohio/singleton/

I posted this because the article indicates that the Unions are going to win and win big.  I’m originally from Ohio, so I don’t know what going on now.  But I remember in Colorado when we had a amendment that would have limited the right of gays to be a special protected group.  It was looking to head easily to defeat in the polls, but as it turned out it passed easily.  Voters lied because they didn’t want to appear “prejudiced.”  This is a wait and see election.

Corzine, ACORN, and October Numbers--three things that don't bode well for Obama

What’s new today

Our # 1 tells us about Jon Corzine’s resignation from MF Global.  He won’t see a severance package.  #2 explains what Corzine was trying to do.  #3 relates how ACORN in New York is trying to insulate itself from further leaks showing that they are involved in OWS.  #4 talks about social justice and how it’s worked in the past.  #5 explains how socialism has simply failed even why capitalism has succeeded.  #6 talks about jobs gained in October.  #7 shows Vanderbilt University requiring conformity in its diversity.  Finally story #8 talks about how regulations are strangling small business.

1.   Corzine Resigns

MF GLOBAL’S CHIEF EXECUTIVE JON CORZINE HAS RESIGNED as head of the brokerage firm which filed for bankruptcy on Monday after a series of bets on European government debt soured.

CORZINE, A FORMER NEW JERSEY GOVERNOR WHO ONCE RAN GOLDMAN SACHS, is under a cloud for allegedly failing to protect clients' investments by cordoning off their funds from the firm's money. THE FIRM IS BEING PROBED BY THE FBI AND BY REGULATORS because it has not accounted for hundreds of millions of dollars worth of clients' money.

MF's board announced Friday in a brief statement that CORZINE HAD RESIGNED FROM ALL POSTS AND CONFIRMED THAT HE WILL NOT SEEK ANY SEVERANCE PAYMENTS, which The Associated Press reported could have amounted to $12.1 million including cash and benefits.

http://bottomline.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/11/04/8631533-mf-global-says-corzine-has-resigned-will-not-seek-severance

The tragedy here is that Corzine not seeking any severance payments seems to be a step up from what we are used to.  The President of Solyndra got $500,000 in severance two months before the company declared bankruptcy (who do you think paid for that?) and recently the top officers in Fannie and Freddie were given million dollar bonuses right before they came to congress asking for a $6 billion bailout.

2.   What Was Corzine Thinking???

What attracted him to such basket cases -- with huge welfare states, large deficits, little if any economic growth and unproductive workforces?

Their price. THEY WERE TRADING RELATIVELY CHEAPLY, thanks to fears that the euro crisis could lead both nations to default on their debt. But CORZINE WAS SURE BOTH COUNTRIES WOULD EVENTUALLY BE BAILED OUT.

The Europeans, he figured, had learned from the Americans that government can “save” the financial system and prevent banks from dying. If you can bail out a massive bank like Citigroup, with nearly $1 trillion in customer deposits, why can’t you bail out a country like Italy?

THAT WAS CORZINE’S INVESTMENT STRATEGY -- AND, MUCH LIKE HIS STRATEGY FOR GROWING NEW JERSEY’S ECONOMY, IT DIDN’T WORK SO WELL. As most people are now well aware, the US bank bailouts didn’t accomplish one of their main goals, namely to repair the banking system so small business could get loans and capital. Who in their right mind would say Bank of America, the nation’s largest and most troubled bank, has put the financial crisis behind it?

Plus, bailing out banks isn’t quite like bailing out countries -- as the about-to-fall-apart bailout of Greece proves.

As the latest Greek deal began collapsing, traders started looking for which firms were most exposed. Not long after that, Jon Corzine’s MF GLOBAL BECAME THE WALL STREET EQUIVALENT OF GREECE.

Corzine isn’t saying much now that the messy details of MF Global’s final days have become front-page news. The FBI  is looking into the matter. and there’s a civil inquiry into the firm’s demise, so his lawyers are keeping him out of public view.

3.   Acorn in Serious Damage Control over OWS

Officials with the revamped ACORN office in New York -- operating as New York Communities for Change -- HAVE FIRED STAFF, SHREDDED REAMS OF DOCUMENTS AND TOLD WORKERS TO BLAME DISGRUNTLED EX-EMPLOYEES FOR LEAKING INFORMATION IN AN EFFORT TO EXPLAIN AWAY A FOXNEWS.COM REPORT LAST WEEK ON THE GROUP’S INVOLVEMENT IN OCCUPY WALL STREET PROTESTS, according to sources.

NYCC also is installing surveillance cameras and recording devices at its Brooklyn offices, removing or packing away supplies bearing the name ACORN and handing out photos of Fox News staff with a stern warning not to talk to the media, the sources said.

THEY’RE DOING SERIOUS DAMAGE CONTROL RIGHT NOW,” SAID AN NYCC SOURCE

Acorn?  Isn’t the organization that folded after numerous scandals and that BHO legally represented in the 1990s?

4.   Social Justice

Imagine someone showing up at your home and saying: “We’re from the government. We’ve determined that this dwelling has more living space than you and your family need. There are so many people who do not have enough. So we’re going to move another family in with you.” THIS ACTUALLY HAPPENED TO MANY PEOPLE FOLLOWING THE 1917 REVOLUTION IN RUSSIA. Among the legacies of the tsars was glaring economic inequality. The new leadership saw that as a serious problem. To solve it required policies designed to achieve “economic justice.” SO, OVERNIGHT, PRIVATE HOMES BECAME TENEMENTS. AND FOR MORE THAN 70 YEARS, THE SOVIET UNION SPREAD POVERTY.

Fast forward to Europe today which is suffering an acute economic crisis. What has gone wrong in Greece and several other countries may be seen as complicated, involving sovereign debt, liquidity, fiscal and monetary policies. Or it can be seen simply: For years, the Greeks have been consuming more than they produce. They have borrowed money and don’t have the means to pay it back. Now they are faced with the prospect of increasing austerity. THEY THINK THAT’S UNFAIR. THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HAVE TAKEN TO THE STREETS TO DEMAND ECONOMIC JUSTICE WHICH SEEMS TO MEAN SOMEONE ELSE PAYING THE BILLS they have run up in the past and plan to run up in the future. One might have expected Americans – self-sufficient rugged individualists that we are – to scoff at such behavior. But from sea to shining sea, THE OCCUPY WALL STREET MOVEMENT IS EMULATING THE GREEKS AND, IN MORE THAN A FEW INSTANCES, ECHOING THE SOVIETS.

The problem with socialism is that it erodes the wealth of society even at it makes people feel entitled to that higher level of living.  It contains within it the seeds of its own destruction.

5.   Is Obama the President we Deserve?

…In Principles of Political Economy (1848), John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) gave three reasons to severely limit government interference in a nation's economy and markets. First, ANY INCREASE IN GOVERNMENT POWER IS A THREAT TO HUMAN INDIVIDUALITY, FREEDOM, AND ORIGINALITY, qualities necessary for the progress of the human race. Second, MARKET ECONOMIES FUNCTION MORE EFFICIENTLY AND PRODUCE MORE PROSPERITY. Third, laissez-faire economies inculcate moral virtues in citizens by making them more self-reliant, virtuous and intelligent. "A people," Mill explained, "who expect to have everything done for them ... have their faculties only half developed."

The test of any theory is experiment, but IT IS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO CONDUCT LARGE-SCALE CONTROLLED EXPERIMENTS IN ECONOMICS. It is difficult to even make meaningful and unambiguous comparisons between countries. Nations differ -- not only in economic systems, but in cultures, languages, traditions, geographies, and natural resources. To test socialism versus capitalism, we would have to take one or more countries with similar social and physical characteristics and divide them in half. After assigning a different economic system to each country, we would then sit back for fifty years and observe what happens.

BUT THIS EXPERIMENT HAS ALREADY BEEN PERFORMED THROUGH AN ACCIDENT OF HISTORY. We know the answer. At the close of World War II, GERMANY AND KOREA WERE DIVIDED INTO SOCIALIST AND MARKET ECONOMIES. SOCIALISM FAILED DRAMATICALLY. East Germany had to build the Berlin Wall just to keep people from fleeing. North Korea is still in the stone age. A satellite photo taken at night shows South Korea ablaze with the light of civilization. But North Korea is dark, both literally and metaphorically.

In the U.S., we exist in a curious state of denial. WE ACKNOWLEDGE THE INFERIORITY OF SOCIALISM BUT CONTINUE TO BECOME MORE AND MORE SOCIALISTIC. Every attempt to shrink the size of government or repeal a regulation brings about a shriek, like a bottle being pulled out of the mouth of an infant. I cannot recall a Republican president or Congress who reduced the size of the federal government. No one wants to surrender a special privilege or entitlement. We know what the best system is, but we lack the discipline to return to it….

Even though we know socialism is a fools dream, the left continues to defend it and pretend “social justice” reforms do not mean socialism.  Of course it does, but changing the language is the tactic the left uses to obscure that reality.

6.  THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION -- OCTOBER 2011

NONFARM PAYROLL EMPLOYMENT CONTINUED TO TREND UP IN OCTOBER (+80,000),AND THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE WAS LITTLE CHANGED AT 9.0 PERCENT, the U.S.Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Employment in the private

sector rose, with modest job growth continuing in professional and businesses services, leisure and hospitality, health care, and mining.Government employment continued to trend down.

Household Survey Data

Both the number of unemployed persons (13.9 million) and the unemployment rate (9.0 percent) changed little over the month. THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE HAS REMAINED IN A NARROW RANGE FROM 9.0 TO 9.2 PERCENT SINCE APRIL. (SEE TABLE A-1.)

Pretty neutral report.  It doesn’t hurt Obama, but it doesn’t help either.

7.   Conformity for the sake of Diversity

Illustrating an intellectual confusion common on campuses, Vanderbilt University says: To ensure “diversity of thought and opinion” we require certain student groups, including five religious ones, to conform to the university’s policy that forbids the groups from protecting their characteristics that contribute to diversity.

Last year, after a Christian fraternity allegedly expelled a gay undergraduate because of his sexual practice, Vanderbilt redoubled its efforts to make the more than 300 student organizations comply with its “long-standing nondiscrimination policy.” That policy, says a university official, does not allow the Christian Legal Society “to preclude someone from a leadership position based on religious beliefs” So an organization formed to express religious beliefs, Including the belief that homosexual activity is biblically forbidden  is itself effectively forbidden. …

This is a very good op-ed piece as are most of those written by George Will.  It appears Vanderbilt is giving us the University version of the “we had to destroy the village in order to save it.”

8.   Blanche Lincoln turns on Obama over Overregulating Small Business

This week, former Arkansas Senator Blanche Lincoln (D) lead a cadre of small business owners from a number of states to Washington in an attempt to convince Congress that their commitment to over-regulating American entrepreneurs is a surefire way to destroy the American economy.

This week, former Arkansas Senator Blanche Lincoln (D) lead a cadre of small business owners from a number of states to Washington in an attempt to convince Congress that their commitment to over-regulating American entrepreneurs is a surefire way to destroy the American economy.

According to the Small Business Administration, regulations on American small businesses, which comprise 60 percent of all private-sector jobs and account for about two thirds of jobs created each year, deprive the American economy of $1.75 trillion annually. By reducing – or at least compromising – on current regulations and letting go of the nearly 4,200 regulations on the table right now to be passed this session, Congress could stimulate one of the fastest-growing American industries. Unfortunately for Blanche Lincoln and her team of American business owners, Congress will be hard to convince.

Lincoln is trying at a very unique time, though, when quick action could prevent a lot of further harm to the American economy. As we stated, 4,200 regulations are in the pipeline, just waiting for Congressional approval. Of those, 845 directly affect small businesses. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There are also 330 new EPA regulations coming down the pipe, all of which are designed to specifically regulate how American small businesses do their job. Without expensive lawyers to fill out regulatory paperwork, and expensive lobbyists to fight the fight on their behalf, small businesses usually just take the regulations sitting down, devoting time and money they could spend growing their businesses and hiring more out of work Americans to doing dirty work provided to them by the US government.

Although not perfectly conservative, Lincoln and her organization are proposing a set of guidelines that would help Congress and the Obama administration curb regulations and more closely analyze the impact of their actions on small business owners.
