Officials hope to approve more loan guarantees
THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION IS MOVING TO FINALIZE AS MANY AS 15 LOAN GUARANTEES FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY COMPANIES BEFORE THE STIMULUS PROGRAM ENDS ON SEPT. 30, and Republicans are questioning whether that could lead to more failures like Solyndra Inc., a company that filed for bankruptcy and may leave taxpayers on the hook for a half-billion-dollar loan.
The loan guarantees essentially make it easier for the companies to get financing as the government guarantees repayment in the event of default. IN SOLYNDRA'S CASE, THE LOAN CAME FROM THE GOVERNMENT ITSELF, BUT PRIVATE BANKS OFTEN PROVIDE THE FINANCING.
A spokesman for the Energy Department said the department won't take any shortcuts during the approval process.
"We will only close the deals that are ready to close on Sept. 30," said spokesman Damien …
Hmmm, do loan guarantees sound like something the is shovel ready? This is part of the reason the stimulus has failed so badly, because the Democrats have used it not to stimulate the economy but to stimulate their donors. Can anyone say “good money after bad and scandal?”
Obama disapproval soars
PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA'S DISAPPROVAL RATING HAS SOARED TO 54 PERCENT IN VIRGINIA, a battleground state the Democrat took from the Republicans to win the White House in 2008 and will likely need to carry next year to win re-election, a new poll released Thursday shows.
The Quinnipiac University Poll, based on telephone interviews with 1,368 registered voters from Sept. 7-12, found that ONLY 40 PERCENT APPROVED OF THE PRESIDENT'S PERFORMANCE, down from 48 percent in the same survey in June….
With everything that is going on, I keep wondering who in the world are these 40% who approve of Obama’s performance? I mean you can be loyal, but truthfully do you really think he’s doing a good job????
James Carville’s advice to Obama: Panic!
People often ask me what advice I would give the White House about various things. Today I was mulling over election results from New York and Nevada while thinking about that very question. WHAT SHOULD THE WHITE HOUSE DO NOW? ONE WORD CAME TO MIND: PANIC.
We are far past sending out talking points. Do not attempt to dumb it down. We cannot stand any more explanations. Have you talked to any Democratic senators lately? I have. IT'S PRETTY DAMN CLEAR THEY ARE NOT HAPPY CAMPERS.
This is what I would say to President Barack Obama: THE TIME HAS COME TO DEMAND A PLAN OF ACTION THAT REQUIRES A COMPLETE CHANGE FROM THE DIRECTION YOU ARE HEADED.
I don't know how else to break this down. Simply put:
1. FIRE SOMEBODY. NO -- FIRE A LOT OF PEOPLE. This may be news to you but this is not going well. For precedent, see Russian Army 64th division at Stalingrad. There were enough deaths at Stalingrad to make the entire tea party collectively orgasm….
Listening to Nancy Pelosi is a lot like listening to Baghdad Bob. "It's no big deal." according to her. Old snakehead comes through with the truth.
DeMint: Obama is “a Venture Socialist”
…VAN SUSTEREN: Have you given up on him personally?
DEMINT: I don't think the president understands free market economics. And I know -- I don't mean to be insulting to the president, but everything he does is central planning right out of the textbooks of what socialism is. And that's a hard thing to say about an American president, but there's nothing he's done that actually encourages a free enterprise, really, market capitalism.
He is really a venture socialist. He talks about government investment, everything he does. And so again, I don't like to be disrespectful to our president, but this president is moving America in the wrong direction. He's made things much, much worse. And we need to minimize the damage….
I think this is a good observation. Obama’s view of creating jobs is that of a venture socialist. The problem is that when he’s wrong we all get the bill and when he’s right, his friends get the reward.
The Fall Guy
SUDDENLY, LIBERAL OP-ED WRITERS ARE TRASHING -- EVEN LAMPOONING -- BARACK OBAMA AS A ONE-TERM PRESIDENT ("ONE AND DONE").
Centrist Democrats up for re-election in 2012 openly worry about inviting a kindred president into their districts, lest the supposed new pariah lose them votes.
LEFT-WING THINK TANKS, ENVIRONMENTALISTS AND ACADEMICS VENT THEIR ANGER AGAINST OBAMA FOR SUPPOSEDLY BEING TOO SOFT ON REPUBLICANS, and too ready to compromise with right-wingers. But what really caused the left-wing falling-out, less than three years after the hope-and-change crush on Barack Obama?
For now, polls.
Obama's popularity has plummeted to little more than 40 percent approval. Suddenly, Democrats worry that the public anger could be contagious. It might infect them as well -- in the way a sinking George W. Bush hurt congressional Republicans up for re-election in 2006.
YET THE LEFT CANNOT FAIRLY BLAME OBAMA. After all, he rammed through on a strictly partisan vote THE CENTURY-OLD LIBERAL DREAM OF A FEDERAL TAKEOVER OF HEALTH CARE -- something that Harry Truman, Lyndon Johnson and Bill Clinton never could do. KEYNESIANS NEVER DREAMED THAT A PRESIDENT COULD ACTUALLY BORROW $5 TRILLION FOR DOMESTIC SPENDING IN LESS THAN THREE YEARS.
The Obama administration even tried to shut down a brand-new Boeing aircraft plant on the shaky argument that the company might thereby be hiring fewer union workers somewhere else. For environmentalists, OBAMA KEPT OIL PRODUCERS OUT OF NEW FIELDS IN ALASKA, THE AMERICAN WEST, THE GULF AND OTHER OFFSHORE SITES. Hundreds of billions in borrowed federal money went to failed "wind and solar" plants in an effort to jump-start "millions of green jobs."
THE OBAMA REVOLUTION UNDER THE RADAR WAS EVEN MORE INSIDIOUS. Open-borders activists were promised that the government would not bother illegal aliens unless they were wanted for felonies. Never before has THE UNITED STATES JOINED A FOREIGN GOVERNMENT IN SUING ONE OF ITS OWN STATES -- in the fashion that both the Justice Department and Mexico have either filed or joined suits seeking to overturn Arizona's immigration law…
And seriously the left thinks Obama is unpopular because he didn’t go left enough. Sometime you feel these people are not simply ignorant, but they are delusional as well.
White House Pressure for a Donor?
The Pentagon has worried for months that a project backed by a prominent Democratic donor might interfere with military GPS. Now Congress wants to know if the White House pressured a general to change his testimony.
The four-star air force general who oversees air force space command walked into a highly secured room on capitol hill a week ago to give a classified briefing to lawmakers and staff, and dropped a surprise. Pressed by members, GEN. WILLIAM SHELTON SAID THE WHITE HOUSE TRIED TO PRESSURE HIM TO CHANGE HIS TESTIMONY TO MAKE IT MORE FAVORABLE TO A COMPANY TIED TO A LARGE DEMOCRATIC DONOR...
Economy should render Obama speechless
IN SOCIETIES GOVERNED BY PERSUASION, POLITICS IS MOSTLY TALK, SO LIBERALS’ IMPOVERISHMENT OF THEIR VOCABULARY MATTERS.
Having damaged liberalism’s reputation, they call themselves progressives. Having made the federal government’s pretensions absurd, they have resurrected the supposed synonym “federal family.” Having made federal spending suspect, they advocate “investments” — for “job creation,” a euphemism for stimulus, another word they have made toxic.
BARACK OBAMA, A PITILESSLY RHETORICAL PRESIDENT, CONTINUES TO GRAB THE NATION BY ITS LAPELS BUT THE NATION IS NO LONGER LISTENING. This matters because ominous portents are multiplying….
Obama is floundering. His rhetoric has always been the way he’s solved problems talking people into doing things his way. But it isn’t working because what he’s talked people into doing in the past isn’t working. Perhaps he should read James Carville’s advice.
Solyndra and the Party of Science
… SO FOR THE PRICE OF TURNING A FAT CHUNK OF WEST TEXAS (10,000 SQ Miles) INTO A TANNING SALON YOU’D PRODUCE — 0.32% OF AVERAGE DAILY ENERGY CONSUMPTION, OR ABOUT THREE HOOVER DAMS. And that’s assuming you could build the (massively expensive) distribution network.
There is solar tech that is more efficient than the stuff Solyndra produced (shock! horror!), as you will see if you click through the “thin film” link above. But this “concentrated photovoltaic” stuff, which uses super-expensive optics to focus sunlight at silicon crystals that take a lot of time to grow, is not in production in any great scale. It’s also currently much more expensive.
Let’s take it a step further and imagine WE COULD COVER NOT 10,000 BUT A MILLION SQUARE MILES OF THE FRUITED PLAIN — AN AREA ROUGHLY FOUR TIMES THE SIZE OF TEXAS — with 20 percent efficient cells. Then you’d produce 3,366,984,543 kWh/day, which is still just 31.6 PERCENT TOTAL CONSUMPTION. And the cost, of course, would be astronomical.
Speaking for myself, I FIND THIS SORT OF “SCIENCE” A BIT MORE RELEVANT TO THE POLICY DISCOURSE THAN RICK PERRY’S THOUGHTS ON SPECIATION, considering the U.S. taxpayer is now on the hook for billions in subsidies to Solyndra and its like. But I’m funny like that…
The party of science is really the partly of science party. They like science when it supports their ideology.
Union Statistics: What You May Not Know
The folks at UnionFacts.com have a ‘vital statistics‘ page that provides some good information about unions that many Americans may not know. Here is just some of the information:
ANNUAL DUES PAID TO UNIONS: $8,217,838,676
TOTAL UNION ASSETS: $8,804,794,935
REPRESENTATIONAL ACTIVITIES: $4,081,097,858
POLITICAL ACTIVITIES: $579,624,489
EXTERNAL CONTRIBUTIONS: $321,121,214
UNIONS THAT FAIL TO PASS DEPARTMENT OF LABOR AUDITS: 92%
What interesting is the $321,121,214 in external contributions. It’s no wonder the Democrats roll over for the unions in negotiations.
Defending the Constitution
…He reiterated concern by others that people are pinning their hopes on the Supreme Court to strike down Obamacare, rather than Congress or the White House-- while he'd love to see the healthcare boondoggle shut down, Pestritto cautioned that the very fact that we are looking to the courts to be the heavyweight and support the Constitution is part of the problem. The professor hit the nail in the head towards the end of the session: "MOST OF POLITICS TODAY IS A FIGHT BETWEEN THE TWO UNELECTED BRANCHES OF GOVERNMENT: THE COURTS AND THE BUREAUCRACY…."
The last statement is a frightening one but true. We need to get back to being ruled by the Constitution rather than how it is going right now.
The global warming theory left him out in the cold.
DR. IVAR GIAEVER, A FORMER PROFESSOR WITH RENSSELAER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE AND THE 1973 WINNER OF THE NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSICS, ABRUPTLY ANNOUNCED HIS RESIGNATION TUESDAY, SEPT. 13, FROM THE PREMIER PHYSICS SOCIETY IN DISGUST OVER ITS OFFICIALLY STATED POLICY THAT "GLOBAL WARMING IS OCCURRING." The official position of the American Physical Society (APS) supports the theory that man's actions have inexorably led to the warming of the planet, through increased emissions of carbon dioxide.
Giaever does not agree -- and put it bluntly and succinctly in the subject line of his email, reprinted at Climate Depot, a website devoted to debunking the theory of man-made climate change.
"I resign from APS," Giaever wrote.
Giaever was cooled to the statement on warming theory by a line claiming that "the evidence is incontrovertible."
"In the APS it is ok to discuss whether the mass of the proton changes over time and how a multi-universe behaves, but the evidence of global warming is incontrovertible?" he wrote in an email to Kate Kirby, executive officer of the physics society.
"THE CLAIM … IS THAT THE TEMPERATURE HAS CHANGED FROM ~288.0 TO ~288.8 DEGREE KELVIN IN ABOUT 150 YEARS, WHICH (IF TRUE) MEANS TO ME IS THAT THE TEMPERATURE HAS BEEN AMAZINGLY STABLE, AND BOTH HUMAN HEALTH AND HAPPINESS HAVE DEFINITELY IMPROVED IN THIS 'WARMING' PERIOD," HIS EMAIL MESSAGE SAID….
