Monday-- Newt's Excellent Adventure

What’s new today

Story #1 reviews last night’s Republican debate and declares Newt the winner. #2 lets us know that the OWS Boston don’t seem to be green.  They made a shambles of the park where they were squatting.  #3 makes you wonder if US News was correct in naming OWS the most important domestic story in the US last year.  It seems their traffic on their web site is in free fall.  #4 is an update on the LightSquared scandal.  #5 is a thoughtful look at the question of election fraud. Is it really not a problem per the left, or is that simply a straw man argument the left likes to use? #6 looks at the government malfeasance.  Which is worse, Wall Street or government?  #7 looks at Obama claim that he hasn’t overpromised and I conclude he has under delivered.

1.  Newt Knocks it Out of the Park

The Bambino stands in the center of the stage, untouchable, uncatchable, unbeatable. He is Newt Gingrich, and he has become the Sultan of Swat.

It is Saturday night at yet another Republican debate and — wham! wham! wham! — GINGRICH KEEPS BLASTING THEM OUT OF THE PARK.

Mitt Romney claims he should be president, because, unlike Newt, Romney is not a “career politician.”

“Let’s be candid,” Newt replies. “THE ONLY REASON YOU DIDN’T BECOME A CAREER POLITICIAN IS THAT YOU LOST TO TED KENNEDY IN 1994.”

WHAM!

Newt, like the real Bambino, Babe Ruth, is a man of appetites. For food and for women, to name just two.

But when the moderators at the Yahoo/ABC debate in Des Moines ASK ALL THE CANDIDATES WHETHER “MARITAL INFIDELITY” IS IMPORTANT AS AN ISSUE, THE NEW BAMBINO DOES NOT QUIVER OR QUAIL. HE DOES NOT FLINCH. HE DOES NOT DUCK THE PITCH EVEN THOUGH HE HAS HAD THREE WIVES AND ADMITS TO HAVING BEEN AN ADULTERER.

“It is a real issue,” Newt says firmly. “People have to look at the person to whom they are going to loan the presidency.”

Loan the presidency! A wonderful phrase that lingers in the mind. And now the Bambino steps into the pitch.

“I have said upfront, openly, I HAVE MADE MISTAKES AT TIMES AND HAD TO GO TO GOD FOR FORGIVING,” he says….

While Romney appears smooth, Gingrich is brilliant.  As you look at them in a debate, who looks more like a career politician and who looks more like a man of the people?  Right now the Republican field looks more like 1980 with Newt being Reagan and Romney being Bush 41.

2.  Apparently Utopia isn’t Green

The Utopian dreamers of Occupy Boston are leaving behind a disgusting field of filth on the formerly scenic Rose Kennedy Greenway, where trees will have to be replanted, grass resodded, sprinklers repaired or replaced and the entire area power-hosed in a massive cleanup that could take weeks.

“We’re close to the end of it, which is very good news. Soon, the park can be repaired and open to the general public,” Nancy Brennan, executive director of the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy, said late yesterday. “WE HOPE EVERYONE MAKES A VOLUNTARY DECISION, AND THIS CAN BE A GOOD, DIGNIFIED END.”

The conservancy has been pushing the city to take action to remove the protesters, sending a letter to Mayor Thomas M. Menino’s office last month EXPRESSING FRUSTRATION AT RAMPANT DETERIORATION OF THE SITE, PLUS HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUES, INCLUDING “DISTURBING” INSTANCES OF DRUG USE AND INTERFERENCE OF A FARMERS MARKET. A judge this week lifted a restraining order on the city, giving it the green light to boot them out. . . .

Brennan said the grass, which has turned into a mud pit, will need to be completely resodded, and she fears several trees that have been damaged will have to be replanted.

“Three or four trees might be lost. There’s browning of the foliage, and there are some broken and bent limbs,” she said. “Part of what we need to do is check on the root systems, and that is just going to take a little bit of time.”

Brennan also expects that the sprinkler system was damaged so much it will have to be repaired or replaced. Also in need of replacement are about 20 percent of the shrubbery and the pebbles from a pedestrian walkway that runs along Purchase Street….

OWS is rapidly becoming a footnote in what’s going on in the country.  And if I remember correctly, the Tea Party didn’t hurt the environment at all.

ONE MONTH AGO, ONE OF THE BIGGEST STORIES WAS THE OCCUPY WALL STREET MOVEMENT. BUT THAT WAS ONE MONTH AGO. From violence and murder to rapes and disease, OWS has been shown as the blight that it truly is. And because of it, despite the shrieking from the Main Stream Media, Americans have rejected Occupy Wall Street and its socialistic values.

This is no more evident than OccupyWallStreet.org's website, which was created by the founders of the protests just before the "movement" went national. THEIR READERSHIP PEAKED IN EARLY OCTOBER AND HAS PLUMMETED SINCE. As the Web Information Company Alexa reports, OccupyWallStreet.org was one of the internet's 2,500 biggest sites just two months ago.

And yet, as they lose tens of thousands of hits, their ranking continues to fall. For the last month, the site was ranked only as the 6,613th biggest on the internet. But it gets much worse for OWS. That rank is only an average, including early in the month when the site was still peaking.

In fact, FOR THE LAST WEEK, THEIR SITE IS ONLY THE 14,149 BIGGEST, AND YESTERDAY ALONE IT WAS THE 17,412TH BIGGEST….

If we hear any more from this group, I’m expecting it to be like 1968 and the Chicago Democratic Convention.  More violence will be used to try to grab attention if OWS tries to come back next year.

4.  Obama Scandal Update:  LightSquared

LightSquared disrupts 75% of GPS receivers in gov’t testing

The saga of LightSquared added a new chapter last night, as Bloomberg reported on the preliminary result of tests of the satellite Internet provider’s service in relation to GPS devices. The Obama administration has pushed LightSquared as a provider for its ambitious broadband expansion over the objections of the military, which warned that LightSquared’s operations would interfere with the satellite-based navigational system. THE DRAFT SUMMARY OF THE NOVEMBER TESTING SHOWS THAT THE MILITARY WAS RIGHT TO BE CONCERNED:…

PHILIP FALCONE IS A BIG DONOR TO THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, and he has billions of dollars at stake in LightSquared’s approval….

… One amusing note: LightSquared announced two days ago that the same tests showed no problems at all. After Bloomberg reported on the draft report, THE COMPANY EXPRESSED OUTRAGE OVER THE “LEAK” OF “PRELIMINARY RESULTS.”

Can you say crony capitalism?

5.  Election Fraud and the Left

…Part of the controversy over "voter fraud," which progressives downplay as voter impersonation, is the term itself. FOLKS CONCERNED ABOUT THE INTEGRITY OF OUR ELECTIONS SHOULD START USING THE MORE INCLUSIVE TERM "ELECTION FRAUD," WHICH INCLUDES VOTER FRAUD, REGISTRATION FRAUD, AND OTHER TYPES OF FRAUD, SUCH AS FRAUD COMMITTED BY ELECTION OFFICIALS.

Republicans don't know precisely how much voter fraud actually occurs -- but then, neither does anyone else. However, voter fraud occurs more frequently than progressives would have us believe, as was ably demonstrated by Hans A. von Spakovsky in an August National Review article:

The claim that there is no voter fraud in the U.S. is patently ridiculous, given our rich and unfortunate history of it. As the U.S. Supreme Court said when it upheld Indiana's photo-ID law in 2008, "Flagrant examples of such fraud . . . have been documented throughout this Nation's history by respected historians and journalists." The liberal groups that fought Indiana's law didn't have much luck with liberal justice John Paul Stevens, who wrote the 6-3 decision. Before being named to the Supreme Court, Justice Stevens practiced law in Chicago, a hotbed of electoral malfeasance.

REQUIRING PHOTO IDS TO VOTE IS BETTER THAN NOTHING AND MAY HELP AT THE MARGINS, BUT IT ISN'T GOING TO STOP VOTER FRAUD. Would poll workers have photos of all registrants on hand to match against the photos presented by voters? (A better solution lies elsewhere.)

The left-wing quotes above don't even rise to the level of speculation; they're part of a deliberate concerted effort to deceive -- a propaganda campaign. ALLEGING THAT VOTER FRAUD DOESN'T EXIST IS A STRAW MAN DESIGNED TO DIVERT ATTENTION AWAY FROM OTHER MORE PRESSING ELECTION PROBLEMS. Alleging that an undetectable fraud doesn't exist draws attention away from the frauds that can be detected, but aren't. ALLEGING THAT VOTER FRAUD DOESN'T EXIST WHITEWASHES AMERICA'S VOTER REGISTRATION MESS.

Progressives allege that new voter ID requirements are meant to suppress turnout, especially of "the wrong kind of people," as the Doonesbury cartoon puts it. BUT THE PROGRESSIVES' RESISTANCE TO EVEN THE MOST BASIC SAFEGUARDS IS AN ATTEMPT TO KEEP ELECTIONS OPEN TO THEFT. PROGRESSIVES DON'T CARE ABOUT THE INTEGRITY OF ELECTIONS; THEY JUST WANT TO WIN, BY WHATEVER MEANS NECESSARY.

America is fast approaching what some think is the most important election in our lives, an election that will determine what kind of nation we are going to be. And yet we come to this critical decision with election systems that can be gamed.

I do believe that the author is correct.  The left wants to keep elections open to theft.  Progressives aren’t real believers in democracy because the bitter electorate who cling to their guns and religion keep them from creating the paradise on earth they know they are destine to create.  They are the believers in Plato's Utopian Kallipolis.

6.  Government’s malfeasance

…This "corporate greed" rhetoric must be put into perspective. The American people are not told that there are two kinds of social domination: 1) class domination, due to the fact that some people are wealthier than others, and 2) POLITICAL DOMINATION, DUE TO THE FACT THAT SOME PEOPLE GAIN POLITICAL OFFICE AND GOVERNMENT JOBS1. These are the political elites. Media and the Democrats tell us only about the first "class warfare" kind of domination, and never the second kind -- i.e., exploitation by those in public office2….

…Example number one occurred in Bell, California, where the city manager raised his salary to $787,637, and the police chief $457,000. And the small city of Bell has 37,000 people. The median income in Bell is $40,556, one of the lowest in southern California. This means that the CITY MANAGER MADE NINETEEN TIMES AS MUCH AS THE AVERAGE TAXPAYER, AND THE POLICE CHIEF TEN TIMES AS MUCH. Fortunately, the Bell, CA officials' salaries were exposed by the Los Angeles Times (not by the government), and they are now being prosecuted by the CA attorney general for fraud and embezzlement. At what point do all property tax increases become fraud and embezzlement?

Progressive critics may say that these large salaries don't compare to the salaries of large corporate CEOS, WHO MAY EARN 400 TIMES WHAT THEIR EMPLOYEES EARN. But there is a huge and significant different difference between the public official and the corporate CEO: the CEO CANNOT FORCE ANYONE TO PAY HIS SALARY, while PUBLIC OFFICIALS DO JUST THAT. And unlike CEOs, public union members get weekly paychecks for life, not just for a few years or the length of a contract, as defense contractors do. THE GREATEST POWER A GOVERNMENTAL BODY HAS IS TO SEIZE WEALTH IS THROUGH TAXES -- NAMELY, PROPERTY AND INCOME TAXES. Anyone who owns property or rents is paying property taxes. And if these taxes are not paid, the government has the right (which it delegated to itself) to seize your house and sell it for back taxes. In counties controlled by Democrats, it is extremely rare to ever see property taxes lowered….

http://www.americanthinker.com/2011/12/the_differences_between_corporate_greed_and_government_greed.html#ixzz1gEVvkK9O

It never ceases to amaze me how people on the left see crony capitalism as a sign that capitalism is corrupt when it is actually a sign that government is corrupt. The solution for the left is more government.  The solution on the right is less government and therefore less government goodies.

7.  Has Obama Overpromised?

President Obama pledged Wednesday “to act boldly now” on the huge deficits. BUT ALAS HIS NEWLY REVEALED BUDGET FOR 2012 IS NO BETTER AT CUTTING THE DEFICIT THAN WAS HIS FIRST ATTEMPT JUST TWO MONTHS AGO.

Yes, we do indeed need to act boldly. With deficits accumulating to $4.3 trillion during over his first three years as president and another $10.4 trillion projected over the next decade, time is not on our side. As it is, the president not only pushed for the increased spending but also has fought budget cuts at each step along the way. And the initial efforts have been meager. THE CONGRESSIONAL BUDGET OFFICE ESTIMATES THAT THE SO-CALLED "$38 BILLION" SPENDING CUT BILL OVER WHICH THE GOVERNMENT WAS ALMOST SHUT DOWN ACTUALLY ONLY CUTS $352 MILLION FROM THIS YEAR’S BUDGET.

The president announced Wednesday that the new proposal "builds on the roughly $1 trillion in deficit reduction I already proposed in my 2012 budget," making it sound as if he has already made the tough decisions fighting for fiscal discipline. Unfortunately, it isn't so. The Congressional Budget Office, designated by the White House as the ultimate referee on spending questions, reported a few weeks ago that Obama’s February budget plans WILL ACTUALLY INCREASE THE DEFITICITS OVER THE COMING DECADE BY $1.2 TRILLION.  That is a sharp contrast to the $1.1 trillion reduction touted by Mr. Obama. The CBO dismissed the president's figure, saying he underestimated how much more both existing and new programs will cost.

That $2.3 trillion difference blows a huge hole in the president's new budget plans. Just that change by itself means that instead of $4 trillion cut in deficits, even if everything else works out the way Obama says that it will, deficits will only be reduced by $1.7 trillion.

Or did he simply underperform?  Right now it won’t be hard for the Republicans to make the case of BHO’s underperformance.  The political commercials have already written themselves.  First you show a video of Obama making a promise and then you show the results.
